Did you know that A POWWOW OFFICALLY BEGINS WITH A GRAND ENTRY? Learn more here. (Karen Shea)

The Grand Entry marks the beginning of the powwow. You will see participants wearing regalia, many kinds of flags, and dancers. You will hear drums, songs, and prayer. Honoring veterans and active soldiers is also an important feature of the Grand Entry. This event is sacred in nature. Please ask before filming or photographing during this time.

Regalia. Please keep in mind that creating traditional regalia is a labor of love and it is worn with great pride. Please do not touch anyone’s regalia. Please do not refer to it as a costume. Similarly, the hairstyles for the event are created with great care and do not touch them without permission. Likewise, please ask permission before taking any photos of participants while wearing regalia.

Honoring veterans. One of the traditional pieces of a powwow is showing respect for veterans of the military. There will be a song honoring veterans. Please be sure to follow the instructions, remove hats and refrain from photography during this time.
