Save the date! IzumonookunI 4/15/23 (Rani Long)

Coming up - one night only! IzumonookunI (in development) -
April 15, 2023 at 7:30 pm in Pickard Theater/Memorial Hall

Presented by Bowdoin's Department of Theater and Dance and the Asian Students Association, IzumonookunI is a performance inspired by Izumo no Okuni, founder of the Japanese dance-drama form, Kabuki – a form that contains little to no trace of its female-centric grassroots origins. Choreographer Aretha Aoki and multimedia artist Ryan MacDonald are reimagining and resurrecting Okuni as a punk, sci-fi figure in a contemporary landscape of digital design and live electronic music, touching on the tensions between erasure and hyper visability.
